München (DE)
In 1991, the City of Munich joined the Climate Alliance and committed itself to reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2010 compared to 1987 figures. Against the background of this very ambitious target, the City of Munich felt compelled to develop numerous activities in the fields of renewable energy and energy conservation.
One of these activities was the adoption of the “Extended Climate Protection Programme” including a large number of climate protection measures. Three special forums namely “Solar City Munich”, “Thermal Insulation of Residential Buildings” and “Energy Efficiency in Office Buildings” with a total annual budget of 260,000 were set up as part of this programme.
In 2006, a fourth forum, “Energy Use of Biomass”, was launched. All together these four forums form the Munich Intelligent Energy Forums. It is currently planned to hold three or four regular plenary sessions of these forums per year with extra workshops, if necessary.

| Main achievements / benefits | Implemented
1. Implementation and organisation of an additional special forum “energetic use of biomass” in co-operation with all relevant local actors 2. Organisation of Munich Vegetable Oil Days (“Münchner Pflanzenöltage”) in cooperation with the local NGO Green City (see: www.muenchner-pflanzenöltage.de). The main focus during this event was the use of vegetable oil in mobility, i.e. in cars. Refitting of cars as well as a vegetable oil press was demonstrated. During speeches and conversations, the advantages and problems of this new technology were discussed 3. Organisation of 8 technical seminars in the field of energy efficiency: Planned 1. Local climate alliance including thematic forums with the participation of all relevant local actors in the field of sustainable energy use (4 forums, at least 3 sessions per forum, running time: 2 years minimum) 2. Development and implementation of concrete CO2 reduction projects by local actors, esp. local economy. This process will be moderated by the municipality 3. Further development of the SEAP and feed in of the results in higher level processes like the Covenant of Mayors initiative |
